While BP looks for a way to cap the oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, people here are looking for ways to help with the clean up effort.

Human hair is no longer being dropped in the water as a way to soak up the oil, but it is needed along the coastline.

Peoria’s Identity Salon held a ‘cut-a-thon’ Wednesday to collect hair they will be donating. They charged $15 per cut.

Owners say they scheduled donations from the event weeks ago through a third party charity called ‘Matter of Trust.’

They say they were told their hair could be used on the Gulf coast or in future spills.

“We wanted to be able to help out as much as we could, and, you know, if we can’t be there in the Gulf, we would at least like to be able to do what we can. And if this is what we can do then, you know, we want to be able to do it,” said owner Carey Moore.

The ‘cut-a-thon’ started at 1 p.m. and just wrapped up at 6.
