QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) — There’s a unique method being used to contain the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and you can help just by getting your hair cut.
Great Clips salons nationwide are now donating their hair clippings to Matter of Trust, a nonprofit organization coordinating an effort to send hair mats and booms to the Gulf coastline.
Hair follicles absorb oil and can be rolled into mats or stuffed into nylons to soak up the petroleum.
From now until May 19 at the Great Clips salon in Quincy, the hair that would’ve been headed for the trash, is serving a greater purpose.
All it takes is your regular haircut appointment.
“Anybody that walks in, all the hair will be donated and sent to Louisiana,” said Great Clips Quincy Manager Mandi Peters. “We will ship it in a big box.”
Matter of Trust says they’ve collected hundreds of thousands of pounds of hair from all over the country.
