Sam Jon’s Salon in Wellington is trying to do its part in helping the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico by collecting hair clippings and shipping them to an organization that uses them to help clean up the oil spill.
Matter of Trust is a national organization that collects hair clippings and makes hair mats and hair booms out of them. The mats and booms are then used to soak up the oil from the water. These hair mats have been successfully used in many smaller oil spills for years.
According to Matter of Trust’s website “hair can also be stuffed into tubes (booms) made from recycled nylons, tied together to surround and contain a spill.”
Sam Pedalino said when he heard about the program on the news he immediately wanted to help out.
“It was exciting when someone called the salon and asked us to participate and I told them we were already doing it,” he said.
Pedalino said all three of his salons are participating. He owns a salon in the Mall at Wellington Green, in Abacoa in Jupiter and his oldest location at 13860 Wellington Trace, Suite 19.
“This is a good way to do something,” said stylist Lauren Gordon. “When you think you can’t do something you can come get your hair cut.”
Pedalino is going to be sending his first shipment out this week.
“We’re just glad we jumped on board,” he said. “We’re just trying to do our part that’s all.
