Moraga Area Project

Hair Mulch Soil Study – Moraga, CA

Project Overview

This project is within a private property in the Moraga area in California. It aims to demonstrate the potential of human hair mulch and hair scrims in soil remediation and stabilization efforts. This project will evaluate the structural integrity of a variety of felted hair scrims over soil and vegetation conditions. We will also be evaluating efficacy in regards to thickness/weight of particular hair scrims/mulch per square foot and associated benefits. The study will include the sorting and felting of these natural fibers, the installation of hair mulch and hair scrims, and the scattering of white clover and California poppy. Past research has shown that hair mulch and scrims increase water retention and reduce evaporation, conducive to increased plant growth and soil stabilization.

Plot Design & Purpose

We are studying on both flat areas and steep hillside terrain, covering an area of about 5,000 ft². Three 1,250 ft² plots were established to evaluate four different soil stabilization products and their effects in different planting conditions.

The first plot is an unnaturally/drastically angled hillside of a former quarry site with sandy, rocky soil and very little existing native vegetation.

The second plot has thriving soil on a naturally sloped hillside with a large quantity of seasonal grass.

Our third plot is a flat environment made up of compacted, clay soil with little to no vegetation. In total, 12 recycled hair scrims, semi-felted and fully felted, ranging in weight from 2,000 to 4,000 grams/100 sq. feet, were installed and marked with posts on these 3 plots. The scrims laid out in the second and third plots are seeded with white clover and California poppy.

Evidence from previous research (add link) has shown that hair provides a slow nitrogen release and has moisture retention properties, nourishing seeds in the early stages of growth.

The theory is that these plants will only increase soil stabilization, aiding in the revegetation of the overall area.

Long-Term Impact and Observations

Over time, with documentation and follow-ups every 3-6 months over a minimum of the next 3 years, we aim to observe how the scrims promote biomass, root development, and erosion reduction. We are curious to see how the scrims with seeds repopulate the eroded hillside with native vegetation, hopefully contributing to the ecosystem of the entire area. We expect that in the areas where there are hair scrims, there will be enhanced soil fertility and reduced soil compaction. Additionally, we are curious to see whether improvement in soil health differs with the different test scrim densities and weaves.

What is Hair Mulch?

Hair Mulch is 100% natural, biodegradable soil amendment made from recycled hair, fur and wool fibers from households, salons, groomers, shelters, ranchers, recyclers, wigmakers, wool spinners, mini mills and more. Hair contains keratin, a protein that breaks down slowly, releasing nitrogen into the soil, adding carbon and increasing water retention. Unlike traditional mulches, hair decomposes over years, enhancing microbial and fungal activity, attracting moths, butterflies, and increasing soil fertility.

Why this matters?

This project benefits the community because it improves environmental stewardship through bioremediation, while enhancing restoration initiatives that support biodiversity. Matter of Trust aims to promote the use of local hair for solutions in alignment with sustainability goals, thus improving social and environmental impact.
