WATERLOO (KWWL) — One Waterloo salon is boxing up hair to help clean up the gulf oil spill.
O’hana Salon and Spa owner Jamie Oberreuter heard about the idea on the Today Show.
Her salon is now saving hair from customers and sending it to Florida through a non-profit called “matter of trust.”
Since hair naturally absorbs oils from the scalp, the hair can be used to remove oil from ocean waters.
“They can actually make hair mats out of the hair too, and the hair mats actually can be re-used and they just actually drain the oil out of it by compressing it. They they can reuse it,” Oberreuter said.
O’hana Salon will be collecting hair until the spill is cleaned up.
Oberreuter is also asking other salons and pet groomers to drop off any leftover clippings.
