VANCOUVER — Vancouver’s Ethos Salon has joined a national effort to collect human hair and animal fur clippings to help soak up the massive oil spill along the Gulf Coast.

The salon will serve as a collection site for human hair and animal fur scraps, which will be sent to the San Francisco-based nonprofit Matter of Trust. The nonprofit is working nationwide to collect human hair and fur, which can be made into mats and booms to help absorb the spreading oil.

Mario Raia, owner of Ethos Salon, said in an e-mail that May 20 is the target date for shipping the collected hair and fur clippings to Matter of Trust. Raia also urged other salons, and anyone who wants to participate, to join in the effort.
