AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC-DT) — If you want to do something to help the Gulf Coast, it could be as easy as getting your haircut.
It might sound a little far-fetched, but it turns out human hair is one of the best products for cleaning up oil spills.
The owner of Progressive Hair in downtown Austin saw that a California-based group called Matter of Trust was asking for salons across the country to collect cut hair to aid in the clean-up effort.
“On Monday, we’re going to ship the hair that we have collected from other salons along with our own to this Matters of Trust,” said owner DeAnna Guyette.
In addition to collecting hair, the salons need clean nylon stockings. Volunteers will pack the hair into the nylon stockings to form “booms” to contain and soak up the oil.
All the salons in Austin has signed up to help.
R!ah Hair Studio in Rochester is also working with Matters of Trust.
