DECATUR – Cleaning up the millions of gallons of oil that began spewing into the Gulf of Mexico on April 20 seems an overwhelming task.
But staff and clients of the Community Living Services Department of Macon Resources Inc., still plan to do their part by organizing a free activity to collect materials to make oil containment booms.
Called Cuts of Kindness, the event will involve licensed hair stylists Lori Hodges, a community living services assistant, Jami Hamilton of Capelli’s Hair Studio in Decatur and Lindsey Kaufman of The Fringe, giving free cuts in the atrium of Macon Resources.
People getting the haircuts are being asked to donate nylon stockings so the hose and hair clippings can be shipped to Matter of Trust, based in San Francisco, Calif., for use in combating the spill.
Janet Shelton, director of Community Living Services, said Cuts of Kindness is the fifth in a series of monthly acts of kindness designed to educate her department’s staff and clients while at the same time making the community more aware of the department.
Shelton oversees seven Community Integrated Living Arrangement homes housing 50 people as well as intermittent CILA services to 30 additional clients living with a relative or on their own. Macon Resources serves people with developmental disabilities.
“The clients are talking about how to be involved,” she said. “Some are going to get haircuts, and there’s a variety of other ways they can help, such as sweeping up hair and organizing the pantyhose.”
Previous acts of kindness by the department included delivering heart-shaped cookies to local fire stations in February, “smile tags” to staff and clients to give to people they appreciated in March, cookie mix friendship jars to group homes not run by Macon Resources in April and May baskets to Meals on Wheels clients and others in May.
