Sri Lankan Tea Farmers Fight Deforestation And Climate Change
Since agriculture is the greatest driver of deforestation, farmers are critical allies in the fight to save standing forests. In Sri Lanka, which exports some of the world’s finest tea, only 28 percent of the country’s original forest cover remains. The Rainforest Alliance trains farmers in Sri Lanka to use an innovative method of weed control to nurture healthy soil, reduce agrochemical use, protect streams and rivers, and boost the overall productivity of existing cropland—thereby reducing the pressures to encroach upon standing forests.
The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that is working around the world to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods. Learn more about our work with tea growers at http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/ar…
